About Adware &
Spyware
The Emerging Internet Threats Survey 2003 (Emerging
Internet Threats Survey, 2003, published by Websense
International Ltd.) provides several rather surprising
statistics. Firstly, one in three companies have already
detected spyware on their systems, while 68% consider spyware
to be a growing and future threat. Secondly, no less than 70%
of companies consider that P2P file sharing is creating an
'open door' into their organization.
Adware, its close relation spyware, and use of P2P file
sharing in office hours are insidious and invidious threats
that frequently evade both firewalls and anti-virus defenses
- but despite the figures, many companies still do not
understand the present and future dangers they provide. Adware
and spyware are the smiler with the knife under the cloak (or
smylere with the knyf under the cloke, if you prefer the
Chaucerian version quoted above).
Adware and spyware are most certainly a real - and growing
- threat. One of the problems is that employees are
increasingly using the Internet at work, but "One in
three companies have no way of managing employee use of the
Internet in the workplace ". At the same time, one in
three companies have already "detected spyware on their
network ", and "70% of IT professionals believe
peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing creates an 'open door' for
hackers ". Without any question, employees are installing
adware and spyware on corporate systems - usually without
the knowledge of the IT Department.
The immediate dangers in this are fourfold:
- consumption of computing capacity
- consumption of bandwidth
- legal liabilities
- security issues
